E-E-A-T
What is E-E-A-T? (Google’s “BS Detector”)
There is no acronym in the SEO world that causes more confusion than E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trust).
It sounds technical. But E-E-A-T is not a direct ranking factor. It’s not a piece of code. You can’t just “add E-E-A-T” to your site.
Instead, E-E-A-T is a concept. It’s a set of guidelines that Google uses to judge which websites are high-quality and which are junk. It’s Google’s “BS detector.” And it’s the single most important concept in modern SEO.
At Saint Digital, we don’t just build sites; we build sites that prove they deserve to be trusted.
Does Google trust your website?
If your rankings are stuck, you might have an “E-E-A-T Problem.” A lack of trust signals (like missing bios) can hold you back. Our SEO Audit Checklist helps you find and fix these reputation gaps.
The Four Pillars of Credibility
Google wants to send users to experts, not amateurs. Here is how they measure that.
1. Experience (The “Been There” Factor)
What it means: Does the author have first-hand, real-life experience with the topic?
- Low Experience: An article on “Best Hiking Boots” written by someone who just read Amazon listings.
- High Experience: An article written by someone who hiked 50 miles in the boots and includes original photos of the mud.
2. Expertise (The Knowledge)
What it means: Does the author have the necessary skills or qualifications?
- Low Expertise: A lifestyle blogger giving tax advice.
- High Expertise: A chartered accountant giving tax advice.
3. Authoritativeness (The Reputation)
What it means: Is this website seen as a go-to source by others? This is largely measured by Backlinks. If the BBC links to you, you are authoritative.
4. Trust (The Foundation)
What it means: Is the site secure, honest, and safe? Do you list your address? Is the content accurate? Trust is the most important of the four.
The Big “Why”: YMYL (Your Money or Your Life)
Why does Google care so much? Because of YMYL.
YMYL stands for “Your Money or Your Life.” These are topics that, if the information is wrong, could cause serious harm (e.g., medical advice, legal advice, investment tips). For these topics, Google holds E-E-A-T to the highest possible standard.
Technical Insight: Author Entities & Schema
How does Google know your author is an expert? It connects the dots using Entities.
We use Schema Markup (specifically Person schema) to tell Google:
“This article was written by [Author Name]. Here is their LinkedIn profile. Here is their degree.”
This helps Google connect your author to their real-world credentials, instantly boosting the “Expertise” signal of the page.
The Takeaway
E-E-A-T isn’t a checklist to “game.” It’s Google’s word for Reputation.
